Leading crane service company improves workplace safety with projected signage

Ireland’s leading crane safety and service company, Hoistech, has improved crane safety in their clients’ facilities with projected safety signage from Projected Image.

Hoistech customers faced challenges with degrading safety floor markings, which led to workers becoming ‘sign blind’ and missing vital health and safety guidance when in the presence of an operating crane.

The company sought dynamic and durable safety signage that was clear to read, wouldn’t fade or wear and could move with the crane.

Experts in projected signage, Projected Image, worked alongside Hoistech to deliver a projected signage solution that attached directly onto the crane’s arm, shining bright safety messages wherever it operates.

“We were delighted to help Hoistech roll out products to improve the visibility and durability of their clients’ crane safety signage. Hoistech’s clients were less aware of vital safety messages around operating cranes due to existing signs quickly degrading, so we came up with a solution that is not only bright, vivid and durable, but also easily adapts to their crane’s movements too,” says Ian Spoors, Managing Director of Projected Image.

Projected Image supplied a bespoke projected signage solution which featured high powered LED gobo projectors that shine bright, clearly visible safety messages onto any surface and in any environment.

When attached to the arm of a crane, these projectors continue to shine safety messages wherever the crane moves across the site.

As well as hatched ‘Keep Clear’ floor signs, the team at Projected Image also designed a custom gobo that marked out the Safe Operating Zone (SOZ) of Hoistech’s clients cranes.

A SOZ is an area around a crane that keeps unauthorised staff away from danger. It typically covers the full reach of a crane’s arm as well as a buffer zone for extra precaution.

This protects workers from risks including swinging loads or crane parts, equipment issues, or unforeseen weather conditions.

“It’s crucial for crane operators to mark out a Safe Operating Zone to ensure workers are always aware of an operating crane and maintain a safe distance. That’s why we worked with Hoistech and came up with a design that perfectly met their clients’ requirements and adhered to lifting equipment regulations. Plus, by mounting our projectors onto the crane itself, the SOZ is always clearly marked no matter where the crane operates,” continues Ian.

Newcastle-based Projected Image have over 25 years of experience in projected signage. Their in-house design and manufacturing capabilities mean they are the only business in the UK to supply both LED projectors and the custom gobos used within them.

“With our powerful, IP-rated gobo projectors and custom SOZ markings, Hoistech can offer the most effective safety signage to customers to benefit from safer crane operations. The crisp and clear projections won’t chip or fade – and with up to 50,000 hours lamp life – workers can now see SOZs and ‘Keep Clear’ areas from further away and for longer,” concludes Ian.
