Increasing Crane Safety with Projected Signage

Safe operating zone projected onto a warehouse floor to improve crane safety.

Crane safety is of the utmost importance on busy sites, from ensuring loads are attached correctly, workers below are safe, and SOZs (safe operating zones) are clearly marked to prevent any accidents or injuries from occurring when lifting loads or moving cranes around site.

Hoistech is Ireland’s leading crane service company, specialising in lifting management and safety. They came to Projected Image in order to improve their clients' crane safety with projected signage.

The Problem

Due to the use of cranes and lifting equipment on sites, painted floor markings and warehouse safety signs were degrading and fading rapidly. Safety signs that are faded can cause a variety of issues, such as workers becoming ‘sign blind’ and missing vital health and safety guidance, including the SOZ of a crane.

Faded signs also mean they need to be repainted or replaced regularly, which can not only be costly, but involve business downtime and halting operations.

As Hoistech specialise in crane safety, they required a durable signage solution, on a site with heavy traffic flow, along with being able to clearly mark out SOZs to keep workers aware of exclusion zones and reduce the risk of accidents on site.

The Solution

Working closely with Hoistech, we assessed their lighting conditions, durability needs and safety signs required in order to create a bespoke projected signage solution to improve crane safety. This solution included high-powered 80 watt and 200 watt gobo projectors, which are designed to withstand the toughest of warehouse conditions.

Our projection experts designed custom safety signs to mark out SOZs on the warehouse floor when cranes are in operation. Along with custom SOZ artwork, Hoistech also wanted some simple hatched boxes for keep clear zones on sites. Once approved, the gobos were manufactured in-house and tested to ensure the highest quality projection, at the correct scale, for Hoistech’s requirements.

The Results

Due to their durability, Hoistech were able to mount the gobo projectors onto the JIBs (the crane’s arm) of the cranes. This means that SOZs can project wherever the cranes are on site, an adaptable solution for crane safety which would not be possible with painted floor markings.

As well as the adaptability that projected signage brings to improving crane safety, it also offers highly visible warehouse safety signs that last. With gobo projection not fading from heavy traffic on site, sign blindness is minimised, ensuring that pedestrians below any cranes will be able to see SOZs and keep clear areas from afar, further improving workplace safety.

Our powerful and robust gobo projectors offer up to 50,000 hours of lamp life, meaning Hoistechs clients' can have constant crisp and clear health and safety signs for up to five years. This, along with gobo projections ability to project over almost any surface and not fade in high traffic areas, means there are no halting operations to repaint safety markings. Saving both time and money for the clients, ensuring they can carry on with day-to-day operations, with peace of mind that their crane safety is a priority and their workers are kept safe.
