Safety is of utmost importance in warehouses and manufacturing facilities, whether the hazards are forklift trucks, or the need to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), clear and comprehensive health and safety signage is key.
In the food and drinks industry, there are further health and safety factors to consider, such as personal hygiene, cross-contamination and handwashing protocols. In food manufacturing, there are strict handwashing protocols from the food standards agency, including when you should wash your hands: frequently-before handling food, after touching raw ingredients, following any breaks, and after contact with surfaces that may be contaminated. These practices are vital to ensure food safety. Health and safety signage plays a key role in promoting these habits by serving as constant visual reminders for workers. Well-placed signage and safety markings reinforces hand washing protocols, ensuring that employees consistently follow hygiene practices, which is essential for maintaining a safe and clean production environment.
The Problem
“At Dunbia, as a major food manufacturer, a culture of food safety & quality is of great importance” along with ensuring workers adhere to health and safety protocols. The company acknowledged that they needed more visibility for handwashing signage, not only to ensure good personal hygiene and handwashing protocols where washing hands is mandatory, but to ensure new employees understand the importance of handwashing in food manufacturing, and keep the high level of food safety Dunbia pride themselves on.
Dunbia came to Projected Image for a bespoke safety signage solution to improve their signage visibility and raise awareness of handwashing protocols in key areas. With being a food manufacturer, they required a solution that would not cause certain problems:
-Visibility: In the food and drinks industry, high levels of cleanliness must be kept, including frequent cleaning of floors. This can lead to floor and safety markings fading quickly and employees becoming ‘sign blind’ and more hazards could be missed.
-Cross Contamination: Cross contamination is one of the key hazards within food safety compliance, it is of utmost importance that food products do not get contaminated. One risk of contamination is painted floor markings, with regular cleaning of floors that’s required, the paint can chip and flake easily, which may contaminate your food product.
The Solution
The bespoke health and safety signage solution that we devised for Dunbia included high-powered 40 Watt Weatherproof Projectors. Whilst the projection was needed indoors, our waterproof gobo projectors are IP rated and are protected from wet and moist conditions, suitable for temperatures between -20ºc and 50ºc, making these the perfect projector for food manufacturing facilities with cold storage.
As Dunbia’s aim was to improve their safety signage visibility, particularly around hand washing protocols, the 6000 lumens offer highly visible safety markings that will not cause employees to go ‘sign blind’ and miss these important messages. The durable floor markings showcase safe condition signs that were manufactured in-house in our labs, and ensure new and existing employees are keeping up with food safety compliance and hand washing, the rotating feature on the powerful 40 watt projector is also an added element which can attract attention to the health and safety signage.
Along with installing the powerful LED projectors that offer “vivid colours”, Dunbia has also utilised the projector’s rotating feature to make the safety markings more “eye-catching and the messaging clear”.
The Results
Since implementing the projected signage solution, Dunbia have reported “increased signage visibility and awareness in factory premises”, leading to employees being more aware of handwashing protocols, and not becoming ‘sign blind’ to important safety signage and floor markings, ensuring that “hygiene and food safety remaining a focus for all at Dunbia”.
As Dunbia have made the switch to projected floor markings, they have opted for a cost effective signage solution with up to five years of lamp-life, they will not need to replace floor markings for years to come. However, if they do want to update their health and safety signage they can simply switch out the gobo image in their projectors, saving time from cleaning off old painted floor markings and repainting.
The implementation of projected health and safety signs has also lowered the risk of contaminants in their food products. Even with regular cleaning and scrubbing of floors, their safety markings will not fade, chip or flake, meaning there is no risk of paint flakes contaminated products.
Dunbia “received excellent service” from our projection experts, who created a bespoke signage solution based on the company’s requirements, lighting conditions and size of the facility. As you can see from this case study, the results have increased visibility and put food safety at the forefront of the business which was Dunbia’s key requirements for this project.
