Time to light up Durham

Time to light up Durham

This year we are lending our skills as an exclusive Sponsor for the event in the lead up to Lumiere Durham - the largest light festival in the UK. Held every two years, the festival attracts 200,000 people to the historic city of Durham and features a variety of light installations around the city.

Last year’s big lighting event

This will be the first year we’re actively involved in the event where designers from around the globe pitch for space for their temporary lighting installations. The above piece by Patrice Warrener used several industrial projectors to illuminate Durham’s Old Shire Hall - painting it with vivid colours.

The piece de resistance in 2015 was a joint video piece led by Ross Ashton called The World Machine. The ten-minute video featured the work of the Cosmology Department of Durham University and the Ordered Universe Project. It combined theories on the modern view of the origins of the universe, with medieval styling and music.

Durham Lumiere 2017

We were approached by Artichoke the team behind the Lumiere to team up with lighting designer Graeme Sewell from Vortex Lighting by providing free full-color glass gobos for a sponsor launch party. The custom gobos will be used in conjunction with projectors to brand New College Durham with the Lumiere Logo.

We were invited to attend the launch party, which was hosted by New College Durham, providing a drinks reception and canapés. Following this, short inductions by the head of the College and Durham’s local councillor gave speeches. Next came the bit we were all waiting for, we were taken through the installations which would be shown at this years Lumiere and have to say looks fantastic.

We are very happy to be supporting the exclusive Sponsor event by providing the glass gobos and transforming the venue. Lumiere Durham is a festival very close to our hearts and we are delighted to be doing our bit for the local community.

As well as beautiful lighting displays, there’s a massive variety of food and drink stalls to keep you cosy throughout the night. Use the hashtag #LumiereDurham to see pictures and tweets over the four days - enjoy the show!
